A look at this author's life and literary works. Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861 in Calcutta. He was the second son of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. His father was a well-known religious reformer amongst the Brahmo Samaj, which at that time was a newly founded Hindu reform movement. As a child, Tagore lived through his father's period of influence by Christianity, leading Debendranath to try to inculcate Christian values in his son. At the age of eight, he met Charles Darwin's "The Descent of Man", which sparked his interest in science and rationalism. Tagore studied literature and philosophy. He learned Latin, Ancient Greek and French and wrote his own poetry. He translated William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" into Bengali. In 1877, Tagore was sent to England for higher education, where he stayed until 1878 at Eden College in Kent. While there, he read extensively on scientific topics, becoming familiar with the works of Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday and other scientists. After completing his studies there in 1880, Tagore returned to India. From the time of Tagore's arrival till 1896, he wrote prolifically in his own Bengali language using a fluent and literary style that was appreciated by both readers and critics. In 1881, he married his elder sister's daughter, Mrinalini Devi. In 1890, she died of pneumonia which was Tagore's first experience with the loss of a close companion. In 1883, he completed his first book of poems, "Bhanusingher Prakash" (The light that falls on the blind). The poems were well-received and brought him to the forefront as a novelist and poet. He wrote his first short stories and plays in 1884 and married Mrinalini Devi in 1883. In 1883, Tagore wrote the novel "Noukadubi" (The boat-ride), which explores human nature and is based on the author's own experiences. In 1885, he wrote "Shesher Kobita" (The last stanza), a collection of eight short stories. In 1886, he wrote his first play "Raja" (The King of the Dark Chamber). The story is a frame story that encloses a fantasy tale about a prince who has been turned into a "jagat-nayak", an immortal being who is aware of neither time nor aging. cfa1e77820
