King was originally introduced to the network by his brother, who had joined in 1979. According to King, it was "the only civilised place I could find where I could kick back and write long essays about whatever struck me as interesting." His first contribution to Usenet was posted on April 10, 1987, and concerned the novel The Name of the Rose; he did not make another post until October 9 of that year. King later claimed that his original account had been deleted after sending a string of messages consisting solely of the word "meow", but an analysis of his posts shows that this did not happen until 1997. King made over 7,600 posts to Usenet under the "Kingsqueak" account between 1987 and 1997, in addition to thousands of others in his own name. From the mid-1990s onward, his contributions became less frequent; he posted just once between 1997 and 2001. His most famous contribution to the network was written not long after the 1988 publication of his novel The Tommyknockers. Entitled "Gramma", it showed King's sympathy for the many people affected by cancer, recounting how his mother had died of it when he was still young. Although he initially intended it as a joke, the story became so popular that it was later published in the magazine Entertainment Weekly. The story's popularity led to its appearance on several best-of lists for 1998, including those from "Time" and "Newsweek". King later told Evan Marshall of the "Houston Press": "A lot of people think I wrote that to get attention, but it's really because I felt sympathy for people going through the same thing. And I'm going through it right now." In 1995, King was reported to have left a message on a website discussion board called The WELL, telling readers: "I am a member of a WELL site known as Stephen King's WELL. cfa1e77820
